Joyce Rice, a harpist since age 4, is a graduate of Wellesley College with a degree in music. She and her husband, Rick, grew up in Hingham, Massachusetts, and, after living in Cincinnati, Rio de Janeiro, Australia, and Indiana, spent many years raising their two children in Amherst, Massachusetts. There, Joyce maintained an active teaching studio and performed extensively with numerous professional groups as well as community, chamber, and collegiate ensembles. She also played with another Wellesley alumna, flutist Ann Weaver, in The Galen Duo, which specialized in 20th Century works for flute and harp. In 1991 she had to leave all that and move to Los Angeles when Rick changed jobs. To fill the music void, she started composing pieces for the students she had left behind, resulting in her first collection, “Valley Tunes.” Soon they moved to New York State and then to Seattle for where they’ve been since 1995 except for 5 years in Hermiston, OR. Joyce continued to publish more compositions and arrangements, and the book “Teaching the Lever Harp.” Although almost all her publications are written for the lever harp, they are also playable on the pedal harp. Since 1999 Joyce has been the guiding force behind the website called Harp Spectrum, at www.harpspectrum.org. With the motto “Exploring the World of the Harp,” the website presents informative articles by experts in classical, folk, and historical harps and their music, as well as by harp makers, historians, and even makers of “non-harps”!
