Charlene North Drake
January 6, 1927 – February 18, 2007
Born in Fort Smith Arkansas, Charlene attended North Texas State University where she studied organ, harp and piano. Her harp instructor was Lilian Phillips. She graduated with a Master’s in Music. Her first teaching job was at a school for delinquent high school girls in Gainesville, TX. She was a tiny lady, but well respected by the students. She moved to Alvin in 1949, taught elementary music in the public school system, and also taught privately for 30 years. Charlene had a delightful sense of humor, and had many devoted students. Charlene North Drake passed away in her sleep on February 18, 2007. She was 80, and had congestive heart disease. A memorial service was held for her on February 26, 2007 in the Confederate Cemetery in Alvin, TX. The officiating Reverend gave a beautiful talk on the wonders and joys of music, and how Charlene shared this with so many people.
Charlene wrote “The Complete Method for Lap Harp”. Originally it was in 2 volumes, and was revised and made into one book several years ago. The arrangements in “volume 2″ are lovely, and the repertoire is quite good. This is a worthwhile book for reference and for learning. Afghan Press Music is very pleased to offer this book.
